Demetrios Balderes

September 26, 1933 — June 23, 2021

Demetrios “Jim” Balderes, 87, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2021. He was born in Athens, Greece on September 26, 1933, moved to New York in 1946, and retired to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida in 2005.

Jim graduated from Samuel Gompers Industrial High School in the Bronx, N.Y. in 1952 and then proudly served our country in the US Army during the Korean conflict. He attended the University of Vermont where he met MaryAnn, his beloved wife of 63 years, and graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1958. Employed by IBM in the Poughkeepsie, N.Y. area for 25 years, he earned the title of Senior Technical Staff Member and six US patents for technical innovation. Jim enjoyed golf, cooking, travel, and spending time with his family.

Jim is survived by his wife MaryAnn; son Paul and wife Dina of New York, son Demetrios Jr. and partner Lawrence Danecke of Tennessee, daughter Anna and husband Andrew Cyran of Florida; granddaughters Olivia Balderes of New York, and Johanna Cyran of Florida, grandson James Cyran of Texas; brothers Jack and Ted of New York.

A funeral service will be held at 6pm on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral home at 3600 Third St. South, Jacksonville Beach FL. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Jim’s loving memory would be appreciated.
