Robert Nagel

August 22, 1924 — April 19, 2016

Robert James (Bob) Nagel passed away April 19, 2016.  He was born in Waudina, MN on August 22, 1924 to Raymond and Minnie (Barthell) Nagel.  He moved to Waukon, IA as an infant, and lived there until his enlistment in the Marine Corp in WWII.  He served from Nov. 1942  in the Pacific theater until his Honorable Discharge in Oct. 1945.  After going to Chaffee College he went to work for Westinghouse Electric Corp. as a mechanic/co-pilot. During his 35 years at Westinghouse he rose to be Chief Pilot and Director of Corporate Aircraft, with over 3.1 million miles of accident free flying.  He served on the Board of Governors of the Flight Safety Foundation and did various audits for them, retiring at the age of 80. After his retirement from Westinghouse he and his wife moved to Ponte Vedra Beach.

His hobbies were racing automobiles in the Sports Car Club of America, Can-Am, and racing enduros at Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen, etc.  He was SCCA National Champion in 1973 and 1974 and a rookie at Indy in 1975. 1985 saw his last race, and the purchase of his first sailboat.  During that tenure he did the Daytona to Bermuda races, and the Ft. Lauderdale to Key West races.  He was a past member of the St. Augustine Yacht Club, a founding member and first Key Man of the Quiet Birdman Chapter in St. Augustine, SCCA and Sawgrass Country Club.  He loved the game of golf and shot his age in 1999.  He is a member of the Masonic Lodge and Syria Shrine of Pittsburgh, and the American Legion Post 233 of Palm Valley.

He is survived by his loving wife Judy, children Rich Nagel, Sandra Angelone, Judi McKeel, Susan Malencia, Tina Valeska, & Chuck Tessmer, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  He is predeceased by first wife Kathleen and grandson Keith, Jr., brother Ross, and sister Nancy.

Private services will be held at Jefferson Memorial Park in Pittsburgh on April 30, 2016.  A memorial service will be held at American Legion Post 233 at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to American Legion Post 233,  560 North Wilderness Trail, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082.
