Lieutenant Commander Robert Larry Corbett, USN (Ret.), age 89, of Jacksonville, FL, was welcomed into Heaven on December 10, 2025. He was born in Parr, SC, the youngest of three children born to Ben and Florence Corbett (Madden).
Larry’s early years were shaped by hard work and resilience following the death of his father. Through support of his mother and the Naval ROTC program at the University of South Carolina, Larry graduated in 1958, opening the door to his lifelong career as an engineer and aviator. That same year, he married his high school sweetheart, Eleanor P. Corbett, a dedicated public educator.
Serving as a helicopter pilot in the United States Navy led Larry and Eleanor to ports throughout Europe, the East Coast of the United States and the West Coast for his graduate studies at the United States Naval Postgraduate School. After retiring from the Navy, Larry joined Sikorsky Aircraft as a test pilot, helping to ensure the safety and performance of Sikorsky helicopters around the world.
Larry took great pride in providing a strong foundation for his family, always ready to lend a hand. He was the ultimate planner — making sure nothing went wrong, whether for an excursion to new places, projects with his son-in-law Mike or opportunities to put his carpool skills to use. His grandchildren were a great source of joy, as he cherished every moment spent navigating carpool lines, attending practices and competitions, and celebrating milestones throughout their lives.
Papa Corbett will be remembered for his strong faith, unwavering love for his family, steadfast sense of duty, and his lifelong commitment to completing every task with care and excellence.
He is survived by his daughter Lisa Hayes, and her husband Mike; whom he loved as his own, grandchildren, Meghunn, Taylor, Austin and Madison.
A committal service will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery on December 29, 2025, at 10 a.m., where he will be laid to rest with military honors.
Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1423 8th Avenue N, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home, 3600 3rd St. S, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250 - (904) 249-1100.
