Ralph A. Sawyer, 87 passed peacefully on April 2, 2026. Bright-eyed and busy-tailed, he was deeply dedicated to his family, faith, and his passions--medicine, intellectual and psychological growth, and a life of service.
Ralph was born in Detroit, Michigan. He was forever devoted to his Wolverines, and graduated from the University of Michigan, earning his undergraduate degree and his Medical Degree in 1968. In Ann Arbor, he met the first love of his life, Judith Sawyer on a blind date! They shared a beautiful and loving 51 year marriage that spanned the globe, forming lifelong friendships wherever they went. Rooted in a deep and abiding love for each other and their families, they embraced a life of learning, connections and growth, raising their children, Jennifer and Jeffrey, with wholehearted support in building their character, values, passions, and faith.
Ralph was a career Navy Ophthalmologist, retiring with 30 years of distinguished service. His work included acclaimed and coveted clinical care, extensive training and mentoring of residents, and meaningful research contributions--all of which he relished. In retirement, Ralph was instrumental in starting the Osher Life Long Institute (OLLI) in 2006 at UNF. (A program for older adults) He not only taught but recruited teachers! Ralph also established the OLLI Enhancement Endowed Fund.
After years of loving care for Judith, and with her blessing, Ralph found a second great love in Adelva, or "Gigi" and "Second Mom," as she is affectionately called by Jennifer, Kent and the grandchildren. Together, Ralph and Adelva spent the remaining years of his life, loving one another, treasuring their days, and enjoying all aspects of life.
He leaves a lasting imprint of his love, values and passions in the many lives he touched--most intimately his wife, Adelva Johnston Sawyer; his daughter, Jennifer Sawyer New; his son-in-law, Kent New; and his grandchildren--Carson, Alexander, Celeste (Natalie), Vivian and Evelyn. He also leaves an enormous circle of friends who felt like family--from early childhood, decades-long relationships, and recent years.
Ralph lived a life of intentional love, faith, dedication and service.
All who encountered Ralph will miss his joy! They will remember his engaging and cheerful demeanor, his curiosity, his commitment to growth and his desire to be God's steward--loving and caring for others, fully and passionately.
Ralph's memorial will be celebrated Friday, June 5 at 11:00 am at Christ Church, 400 San Juan Dr., Ponte Vedra Beach, 32082
