Phyllis's professional journey began at Stokley Lumber in Perry, Iowa, but it was her remarkable tenure with the American Cancer Society (ACS) in Atlanta, Georgia, that became the crown jewel of her career. Her work at ACS not only allowed her to make a significant impact on the lives of many but also fostered lifelong friendships with colleagues who admired her spirit and dedication. After retiring in 2000 at the age of 70, she returned to Jacksonville Beaches, a place she adored, where she rekindled her connection with the First Christian Church of the Beaches and continued to grow meaningful relationships. In 2015, she found love again when she married Chuck Walker, adding a wonderful chapter to her vibrant life.
Phyllis was not only devoted to her career but also to her family, which she cherished above all else. She loved spending time with her family. She never missed sending a birthday card and calling to sing happy birthday. She demonstrated her love through cooking wonderful meals and making holidays special.
She truly had a passion for family, gardening, creative arts, and serving her church and community.
She and Chuck had many adventures traveling throughout the US and beyond. They also found great pleasure in having their hands in the Earth, nurturing plants and flowers of all kinds. As an enthusiastic gardener, Phyllis completed the University of Florida Master Gardener Program, not once but twice! She delighted in sharing her plant knowledge and especially loved gifting plant samples from her yard for others to propagate. One could say she spread plant love throughout the southeast.
Phyllis particularly loved the beauty of the birds that surrounded her home. She and Chuck spent countless hours on their back porch enjoying the sights of their garden and feathered friends that visited.
Her creativity shone not only through her art projects of unique and special garden stones but also through the well-loved delicious potato salad and homemade ice cream that graced family gatherings.
Phyllis was a long time member of First Christian Church of the Beaches having joined as a member in 1980. FCCB became her second home where she was devoted to her faith and cultivated some of her longest friendships as well as being where she met her husband Chuck. As part of her church life, she was always willing to offer a helping hand or casserole to an event or someone in need.
In her retirement, she was the wedding coordinator for the church and loved serving in that way. As well, she and Chuck spent a great deal of time contributing to the community through many organizations one of which being Seniors on a Mission; offering meaningful work with a purpose to area charities and ministries.
Those who were fortunate enough to know Phyllis witnessed her belief in God, her quiet grace, strength and commitment to others. She constantly sought to serve those in need whether in her own family, church family or community at large.
Known for her caring nature and life of service to others, Phyllis touched the lives of many, leaving behind a legacy of beauty, kindness, friendship, and love.
Phyllis Scott will be remembered as a remarkable woman whose spiritual strength and compassion enriched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her journey on Earth may have come to an end, but her influence and love will resonate through the many lives she has touched. A private family service is planned for the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society; Memorial Donations to American Cancer Society
