TOBI Norma Schmidt Tobi, 81, passed away on March 9, 2016. She was born July 18, 1934 in El Reno, OK. Norma grew up in Oregon and California. She graduated from Chico High School in Chico, CA. She proudly attended the University of California, Berkeley. She graduated with honors and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics. Norma was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society and elected to the California chapter of the scientific research honor society, Sigma Xi. Norma worked as a mathematician for Shell Oil in the San Francisco Bay area. In the early 1960s she relocated to Jacksonville. She joined the architecture and engineering firm of Reynolds, Smith & Hills as a computer programmer. Norma programmed systems for some of the earliest mainframe computers. During the following two decades, Norma embraced the job of raising her daughters. After retiring, Norma was involved with numerous community organizations including an appointment as board member of the Ponte Vedra Beach zoning committee. She also volunteered as a captain for the Ponte Vedra voting precinct and provided significant assistance to the Ponte Vedra Rotary Club. Norma enjoyed a lifetime of sewing and also liked walking on the beach and traveling. She was a loving friend to the family cats and the plants that flourished in her garden. She will be remembered as a person who was selfless in her ways, devoted to her family, and approached life with much determination. Norma is survived by her husband of 51 years, George B. Tobi, Jr.; daughters Karen Tobi and Paula James (Troy); grandchild Megan James; brother Charles Schmidt (Shirley) and sister Mary Littleton (Joe). A private graveside service will be held in her honor at Oaklawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or a Alzheimer's Association .
