Michael “Mike” Edward Tolley, born on October 5, 1947, in Huntington, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida, surrounded by his loving family after a brief struggle with brain cancer. He leaves behind a legacy of devotion, kindness, and an enduring spirit.
For 32 proud years, Mike dedicated himself to the Army Corps of Engineers, a career that fulfilled his passion for civil engineering. His remarkable intellect and problem-solving abilities made him a respected figure among his peers, culminating in a well-deserved retirement.
Mike's commitment to his work was paralleled by his dedication to his family, especially to his beloved wife Pam. Their partnership, steeped in love and friendship, spanned almost 53 wonderful years. Mike’s family adored his giving spirit, his immense capacity to care for others, and the joy he found in teaching those around him. Mike was also deeply devoted to his kids and grandchildren, never missing an opportunity to spend time with them or proudly show photos of them to everyone.
An energetic individual, Mike sought adventure and embraced life with enthusiasm. His hobbies included kayaking, mountain biking, and hiking, and after retiring, he cherished long months spent camping in nature.
Mike was never one to rest for long; he was the quintessential tinkerer, always fixing or creating something new. Notably, he invented a kayak car rack, which allowed him to effortlessly load his kayaks onto his automobile. Mike is remembered for his warm personality, characterized by his thoughtfulness, discernment, and generosity. He fostered strong relationships, demonstrated loyalty, and was deeply committed to his family.
Mike will be missed by his adoring wife, Pam Tolley. His legacy lives on through his children, Amy (Jim) Bonanno and Nick (Carolyn) Tolley, as well as his grandchildren: Kyle, Jack, Mia, and Owen. He also cherished his sister, Jean Brumfield, along with numerous nephews and nieces. Mike was predeceased by his brother, Dave Tolley.
The Tolley family invites all who knew and loved him to join them in celebrating his remarkable life. A service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the Beach Church Chapel in Jacksonville Beach, FL. A reception will follow at Paula Powell’s home at 3779 Golden Reeds Ln. Jacksonville, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
