Martha Ecker Deen, 96, passed away on April 13, 2026, in Ponte Vedra Beach.

Martha was born on March 23, 1930 in Athens, GA, to Joseph Thomas Ecker and Martha Holliday Ecker. She grew up in Athens, attending Athens High School. She had one brother, Harry Allen Ecker. Martha married Hugh Gordon Deen on June 9, 1950, in Athens, GA.

Martha received her undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia in 1951, and later received a Masters degree from Auburn University. She moved to the Beaches area in 2000. Martha had a career as an elementary school teacher and social worker, but her primary focus was always on family. She was never happier than she was at a family gathering for Thanksgiving or Christmas or a birthday celebration. She was a lifelong learner and devout member of Christ Episcopal Church, Ponte Vedra Beach, and completed the demanding, 4-year lay ministry course, Education for Ministry, in her 80’s. Martha played the piano and shared her love for music with those around her.

Martha is survived by her son Gordon (Ruth), daughter Laura (Albert – deceased), grandson Joseph, and granddaughter Ruthie. She was predeceased by her husband Hugh, mother Martha Holliday Ecker, father Joseph Thomas Ecker, and daughter Martha Evan Deen.

A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Ponte Vedra Beach, date TBD, with reception to follow at the church. Quinn Shalz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. For more information call Christ Episcopal Church at 904-285-6127.
