Kay McGhee Leary

Kay McGhee Leary, beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida, at the age of 70.

Born in Niagara Falls, New York, and raised in Westport, Connecticut, Kay’s early life was filled with friendship, music, and community. She participated in Girl Scouts, Band, Choir, and Orchestra, forging lifelong bonds along the way.

A lifelong learner and passionate educator, Kay earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Skidmore College, followed by a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2003, she completed her PhD in Nursing at the University of Florida. Over her distinguished career, she worked as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and served as a professor at both Jacksonville University and the University of Florida, Jacksonville Campus, leaving a lasting impact on countless students and patients alike.

Kay had an insatiable curiosity and love for history, travel, and learning. Whether exploring new places or relaxing at the beach, she found joy in every moment. She cherished time with her friends—playing bridge, diving into book club reads, and giving back through her active involvement with the Women’s Giving Alliance and the PEO Sisterhood, DQ Chapter.

She is survived by her husband, Todd G. Leary; her devoted daughter, Kay Lewis Hood; and her dear sister, Bonnie McGhee Strittmatter. She will be remembered for her warmth, wisdom, joyful spirit, and the countless lives she touched.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Palms Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville Beach on Friday, August 1, 2025, at 11:00 AM. All who knew and loved Kay are welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to a women’s health or education-focused charity in Kay’s honor—reflecting the causes she held close to her heart.
