John William Ross, known to many as Bill, was born on September 4, 1928, in Madison, Indiana, and passed away peacefully on June 29, 2025, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Faith and service shaped much of Bill’s life. A long-time member of the Episcopal Church, he was a past member of St. Johns Cathedral and currently a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach. He served in a variety of roles, including in Prison Ministry, on Diocesan committees, and at national church conventions. His leadership and steady presence made a lasting impact in each setting.
Bill studied at Hanover College, Georgetown University, and the American Graduate School of International Management at Thunderbird. He later mentored others in their spiritual formation through the Education for Ministry (EFM) program—work he took to heart.
A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Bill brought the same sense of purpose to his military service that he carried throughout his life. He traveled widely, always curious and open to new cultures. His artwork—particularly coastal landscapes—reflected his appreciation for the natural world. He found joy in music, especially Scottish and classical.
Bill also gave generously of his time to ministries like Cursillo, Kairos, and Discovery, and served as president of the board for Episcopal Children’s Services.
Bill is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Straus and Suzanne Tullis, and his grandson, Aaron Straus. He was preceded in death by his wife, Libby Lyon, whose memory remained close to his heart.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, July 25, 2025, at Christ Episcopal Church, 400 San Juan Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Bill’s life was grounded in faith, shaped by service, and enriched by curiosity and care for others. He will be deeply missed.
