James DeAngelis, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Born on April 1, 1944, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, James lived a life dedicated to service, education, and the passion of football.
In the mid 1950's James' parents moved their young family to Jacksonville, Florida. James graduated from Terry Parker High School in 1962, where he famously earned the title of Defensive Back Player of the Year in 1961. His commitment to excellence continued as he pursued a Bachelor of Science degree and Physical Education degree at Western Carolina University, from which he graduated in 1966. It was during this formative period that he met his beloved Jewel Eagle, the love of his life, whom he married in December of 1964. Their union would blossom into a profound bond that lasted 36 beautiful years.
James's career was marked by a lifelong dedication to coaching football and mentorship. He began as the assistant coach for the football team at Fletcher High School in Jacksonville Beach from 1967 to 1971 before being appointed head coach at the newly established Sandalwood High School, where he nurtured aspiring athletes until 1980. Subsequently, his coaching journey took him to Wolfson and Englewood High Schools before his triumphant return to Fletcher High School as Offensive Coordinator in 1987, where he remained until his retirement in 2002. James was especially proud to coach his own sons, sharing not just the field but also the essential life lessons that accompany the sport.
Being known for his unwavering determination and warmth, James approached every circumstance with an open heart and an accepting spirit. Even after losing his sight in 2002, he never succumbed to despair, choosing instead to persevere and adapt to the changes life presented. His outgoing personality and kindness left a profound impact on all who knew him, as he continuously sought to uplift those around him.
He is survived by his cherished sons, Dax (Sandra) DeAngelis and Dain (Kim) DeAngelis; grandsons, Dain (Zoey) DeAngelis and David DeAngelis; granddaughters, Skyler DeAngelis and Sydney DeAngelis; brothers, Richard (Judy) DeAngelis and Gerald "Jerry" (Holly) DeAngelis, and his sister, Kathy DeAngelis.
Preceding him in death are his adored wife, Jewel, who was his constant support; his father, Cy DeAngelis, and his mother, Marie (Doria) DeAngelis.
Though James has departed from this earthly realm, the love he shared and the lives he touched will forever remain vibrant in the hearts of his family and friends. The profound influence James DeAngelis wielded throughout his life serves as both a testament to his character and a legacy of resilience and warmth.
