Harry Northup

d. March 6, 2016

NORTHUP Dr. Harry Martin Northup, 72, of Atlantic Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 6th, 2016 at his home after a long battle with cancer. Martin was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas on December 28th, 1943 to Harry Leon Northup and Janice Fleeta Northup, both of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Martin was the second oldest of four boys: James Franklin Northup, Jerry Leon Northup, and Earnest Claude Northup. He received a Bachelor's degree in zoology from Arkansas Polytechnic University. He attended medical school and completed a residency in radiology at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine, Little Rock. He landed in Jacksonville through a second residency in radiology at University Hospital (now UF Health). Martin also served in the US Navy as a Flight Surgeon for two years. He has held many positions throughout his 43 year tenure at UF Health. His primary love was teaching residents in the Department of Radiology, where he served as Professor and Chairman. His influence reached the hospital as a whole when he was Chief of Staff from 1988 to 1995. He was an active member of the Northeast Florida Radiological Society, the Florida Radiological Society, and the Radiological Society of North America. He held various positions in these organizations, including President of both NFRS and FRS. Martin received many awards and recognitions throughout his career, most notably the Florida Radiological Society Gold Medal Award (2004), the Luis Russo Award for Outstanding Medical Professionalism (2015), and the Florida Radiological Society Lifetime Achievement Award (2016). The H. Martin Northup Conference Room was dedicated to his long career at the institution and is intended to promote resident education with protected meeting space and state of the art technology. While Martin had a distinguished career in medicine, in his own words his priorities were God first, Family second, Career third. Martin was a faithful long-time active member at Beach Church, Jacksonville Beach, FL. He served as a member of the praise choir, student ministry leadership team, and participated in local, regional, and international mission work. His work with missions at Beach Church led to his involvement with Faithful Servant Missions (FSM), traveling many times to Costa Rica and Panama to serve at both missions' sites. Martin was particularly passionate about the FSM Feeding Program in Panama and the difference it made in the lives of the Nogbe Bugle families. Martin is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Lynn Meree Northup and his youngest brother, Earnest Claude Northup of Little Rock, Arkansas. Martin is also survived by 4 children and 5 grandchildren: Terri Northup Wall of Jacksonville (husband John, children Monica, Jacob, Katharine, and Martin); Tracy Northup Boyd of Jacksonville; Sarah Northup Keller (husband Gregory, son Harrison) Atlantic Beach; and Jordan Martin Northup of Atlantic Beach. Martin will be remembered by the way he served others with a true servant's heart. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, March 12th, 2016 at 2pm in the Family Life Center of Beach Church, 325 7th Ave N, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250. There will be a reception following the service at the church. Memoriam Donations can be made to Faithful Servant Missions Panama Feeding Program (www.faithfulservantmissions.org) or to the H.
