George Gilbert Gooden Jr., of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2026.
Born May 23, 1951, to the late Shirley and George Gooden Sr., in St. Louis, Missouri, George grew up with a strong sense of independence and curiosity. He attended Jacksonville University, where he began developing his artistic talent from a passion to the foundation of a life long career. As a young man, he was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, an experience that reflected his appreciation for the outdoors and hands-on learning.
George built a long and respected career as an Architect and later Building Plan Examiner, working for the City of Jacksonville. He took pride in his work and in serving his community, known for his attention to detail and strong work ethic.
Outside of work, George enjoyed life in his own unique way. He loved camping and visiting state parks, listening to classic rock music, and spending time with the people he cared about most. He had a deep love for his two cats, Kylo and Leia, who brought him constant companionship and comfort.
George is survived by his children, Bridgette Smith and Shanna (Ryan) Ackerman; his grandchildren, Cody Smith (Anna Scheuren), Liam, Lauren, and Finn Ackerman, and Chloe Bays; and the extended Bays family. He is also survived by his three brothers, Dave, Eric, and Tom Gooden.
George will be remembered for his humor, his Top Chef–worthy cooking, and his love of shooting and the outdoors. He had a way of making people laugh, even in the simplest moments Though he could be set in his ways, those who knew him best understood that beneath that stubbornness was loyalty and deep care for his family.
He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, laughter, and devotion. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. In his memory his family suggests an ice cold Corona and a slice of Publix key lime pie.
In accord to his wishes, a celebration of his life will occur March 7th, 2026 from 11 A.M to 1 P.M. at Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home, 3600 Third Street South, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250.
