Elinor Ruth Martin, 96, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on October 22, 2025.

Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Durham, North Carolina, Ruth eventually made her way to Jacksonville Beach, Florida, where she built her family home and raised her children Debbie and Marty. Later in life, she moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, where she continued to share her creativity, and love of life with everyone she met.

To her friends, she was known as “Ruth,” and to her family she was lovingly called “Mema.” Ruth loved creating with her hands—whether sewing Halloween costumes, crafting shell wreaths from her beach walks, or designing a one-of-a-kind piñata of her granddaughter as a birthday surprise. She delighted in sharing her talents with others, patiently teaching the younger generations how to sew on buttons, cook in the kitchen, and take pride in doing things themselves.

Ruth was known for her cooking, and no holiday gathering was complete without her layered salad or her famous mustard recipe. Her family always loved when she would drop off freshly baked oatmeal cookies or homemade apple rolls. She loved spending time in the kitchen—often pairing her delicious dishes with a well-earned glass of wine and lively conversation.

Fiercely independent throughout her life, Ruth earned her master’s degree from Jacksonville University and worked as a teacher and librarian. She placed great value on education and believed that knowledge was one of the most meaningful gifts a person could give. She also led educational tours across Florida with Elder Hostel, sharing her love of learning and adventure with others. One of her favorite programs was in Sanibel Island, where she combined her appreciation for nature and creativity—spending hours collecting seashells for her craft projects and forming lasting friendships.

Ruth was a seasoned traveler, finding joy in exploring the world. Some of her favorite trips took her to China, Venezuela, and Alaska, to name a few—each leaving her with lasting memories and stories to share. She also loved a good road trip, always ready for an adventure and the chance to see where the next turn might lead.

An avid bridge player, Ruth was a formidable opponent at the card table. Her friends often joked that the safest seat in the room was beside her, not across from her. Her independence, intelligence, and quick wit made her as sharp in conversation as she was in competition.

In her later years, her grandson Austin remained closely involved in her life, ensuring she was surrounded with love and care. Her family is deeply grateful for her wonderful caregivers—especially Tonya, who shared an extraordinary bond with her, and Lisa, whose kindness and companionship brought great comfort and joy.

Ruth will be remembered by her loved ones through shared memories and stories, her yummy recipes, and the laughter they share. Her warmth, creativity, and love for life will forever remain in our hearts. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
