Eileen Hewitt Spelman passed away peacefully at home on November 24, 2021. Born March 16, 1935, in Schuylerville, NY, she was the youngest of nine children and the daughter of the late George J. Sr. and Julia (Conroy) Hewitt.
A 1953 graduate of Schuylerville Central School, Eileen was Senior Class President, member of the National Honor Society, played a leading role in the Senior Play, and was active in numerous clubs and service activities.
After graduating from SUNY Potsdam in 1957 with a B.S. in Elementary Education, Eileen married Richard Spelman, her husband of 63 years, and taught 6th grade in Norwood, N.Y.
Eileen and her husband lived for many years in Virginia, where she taught 4th grade and went on to get her Master of Library Science. She was an elementary school librarian and teacher until her retirement when she and her husband moved to Jacksonville, FL.
Eileen was an avid golfer and enjoyed skiing, traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends. She traveled a great deal with family including a major trip to Ireland, the British Isles and many trips with her sisters and husband around the U.S. She and her husband also enjoyed cruises around the Caribbean and too far off places, such as, St. Petersburg, Russia.
Eileen is survived by her loving husband, Dick; sister, Julia Hewitt; brother, George Hewitt (Becky); and many nieces and nephews who treasure memories of her joyful company on skiing trips, family picnics, vacations to Cape Cod and Maine, and at Christmas dinners and celebrations.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, December 6, 2021 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Cypress Village Retirement Community. Interment will be in Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date.
