Dr. Jerry Alderman

May 31, 1938 — March 12, 2016

ALDERMAN The world lost a genius. Dr. Jerry Lee Alderman, born May 31, 1938 in Jacksonville, Fl., passed away on March 12, 2016. A theoretical and particle physicist, he received his undergraduate degree in mathematics and physics from the University of Florida. His Master's in physics from the University of Washington and his PhD in mathematical physics from George Washington University. He was a member of the physics faculty at Virginia Commonwealth. He was senior physicist at Vitro Laboratories, a research engineer with Boeing, chief scientist at Mantech Corporation, and achieved national recognition for achievements serving the US Navy air strike community and the Strike Fighter Weapons School at NAS Cecil Field. There, he developed all the original air surface strike planning software for the F/A-18 Hornets under his own company St. John's Research Corporation and he created software products used by naval aviators in contexts where errors could not be tolerated. Then, he conducted research in neural network computing with the Mayo Clinic to classify proteins and he finished his career at Texas Instruments and Raytheon with a series of patents awarded and a published book. An avid sailor, poet, writer, lover of creativity and original thought, a Gator and an intense, authentic soul, he took the road less traveled. He is survived by his daughter, Shannon Alderman, his brothers, Dr. Harold Alderman, Peyton Phillips and Paul Phillips and nephews and cousins from the Alderman, Phillips and Greenman clans and friends around the world. A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, March 19th at 10 a.m. at Restlawn Memorial Park, 2600 Ribault Scenic Dr, Jacksonville, FL 32208. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vision is Priceless or to Feeding America. Services under the direction and care of Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home
