Desmond Paschal McElroy, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2026, at the age of 89.
Born in Northern Ireland on March 27, 1936, Desmond carried with him a deep work ethic, strong faith, and adventurous spirit that would shape the remarkable life he built in America. At just 21 years old, he immigrated to New York City with little more than determination and hope. Through grit, resilience, and talent, he created the American dream for himself and for his family.
Desmond began his career at NBC Television in the early 1960s, where he rose through the ranks to become an award-winning film editor and producer. Over two decades with NBC, he worked on numerous documentary specials and magazine segments, earning multiple Emmy nominations and the respect of colleagues across the industry. His work included collaborations with some of the most recognizable voices in broadcast journalism.
An entrepreneur at heart, Desmond later founded his own post-production company in the Washington metropolitan area, building a successful business that served major networks and clients including Discovery Channel, PBS, Black Entertainment Television, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. He took immense pride in mentoring others and in the craft of storytelling through film and video.
While his professional accomplishments were many, Desmond’s greatest joy was always his family. Formerly of Benraw, Leitrim, County Down, he carried his Irish roots with pride throughout his life. He was predeceased by his first wife Mae (née King), sister Rose and brothers Gerard, Bernard, Frank, Eugene, Patrick Joseph (PJ), Dominic, and Brendan, and is lovingly remembered by his sisters Cora O’Hare, Gertie Walsh, and Monica McNeill, and sisters-in-law, Margaret and Mary.
In Florida, he is survived by his devoted wife, Josephine, and his three daughters from his first marriage to Mae: Monica (husband George Dunn; grandsons Colin, Conor, and Luke), Kerrianne (husband Bill Rejevich; grandsons Brendan, Kevin, Owen, and Liam), and Letitia (husband Chris Aitken; granddaughters Tracy, Shelby, and Ciara, and grandsons Christopher and Colin). Time spent with his children, grandchildren, and extended family brought him his greatest happiness.
Desmond was loving, kind, faithful, hardworking, charming, and endlessly optimistic. He greeted life with gratitude, a ready smile, and a song in his heart. A proud Irish-American patriot and a man of deep faith, he lived with integrity, generosity, and quiet strength. He was a steady presence, a gentle guide, and a source of laughter and comfort to all who knew him.
He will be sorely missed and forever cherished.
