Charles Battell

April 12, 1932 — August 9, 2014

Charles "Charlie" "Chuck" Edward Battell, 82, passed away peacefully at home, Aug. 9, 2014. Born April 12, 1932, in St Augustine, Fla., Charles grew up in Jacksonville Beach and lived the majority of his life in Palm Valley.
His wife, Ethel, was the center of his world. Married 61 years, they enjoyed making even the ordinary aspects of daily living a pleasure. During the Korean War, Charles was stationed in Japan where he was trained as a telephone repairman. Upon discharge, he went to work for Southern Bell until he retired in 1983.
One important part of his life was serving as a deacon in the Palm Valley Baptist Church for many years. He felt a need to serve his community and followed his love of fire engines to the Palm Valley Volunteer Fire Department where he eventually became chief for 23 years. During that time, he initiated ideas and plans that eventually led to the progression of modern equipment and training in St. John's County.
He was a loving father and a strong role model for service and helping others and inspired his four daughters to do the same.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Ethel; daughters, Marie "Dimples" (Mike Riley) Battell, Karen "Cookie" (Bruce) Dickinson, Sharon "Snookum" (Michael) West, Bobbi (Michael) O'Connell; grandchildren, Jaime Hinson, Jonathan West, Amanda (David Weintraub) Dickinson, Chuck Dickinson, Alex O'Connell, Austin O'Connell; sisters, Essie Trusty, Sharon Walters; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his only son, Charlie, who passed away too soon at age 5; mother, Katherine Battell Wood; father, Albert Per Battell; sister, Isabelle Bundy; and brother, Albert Battell.
The family wishes to thank Curtis Bremer for his help and support during Charles' final days.
