Barbara Phillips

d. April 26, 2013

PHILLIPS Barbara Ann Bowen Phillips, beloved matriarch of the Phillips Complex of Atlantic Beach, peacefully passed away with her family present on April 26, 2013 at Mayo Hospital after a sudden illness. Sissy as she was called by her parents, JB and Eva Rock Bowen, was born in Tampa on July 3, 1933. She later moved to Jacksonville where she graduated from Robert E Lee high school, class of 51. For a brief time, she worked for the Federal Reserve, Peninsular Insurance and the Florida Welcome Center on Highway 1. In 1956, she realized her true calling after a blind date with an Engineer with the Corps of Engineers who had no car, only a small airplane. After a few flights and a very short courtship, Barbara married Don Phillips on April 5, 1957 at Riverside Presbyterian Church. Beginning their family in the Lake Shore area they later moved to Atlantic Beach in 1969. Barbara had three sons and a daughter, although, at times it seemed to be many more because of the welcoming environment she created. Mama P s home was always open to anyone for home cooked meals and compassionate conversations. This continued with the addition of nine grandchildren and her To Do List which read: Always offer free hugs and kisses, keep the candy jar full, and make her famous cheesecake. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Don Phillips, sons Bob (Eileen), Brian (Trisha) and David (Miles) Phillips, daughter Donna Phillips Wilson (Jim), grandchildren Jason, Michael, Matt, Katie, Kristen, Mark, Luke, Bowen and Kellan, brother Bob Bowen (Carol) and sister Carole Jean Bowen Stanley. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 4th at 1pm at Community Presbyterian Church, 150 Sherry Dr., Atlantic Beach. In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. (Woundedwarriorproject.org/donate : 877-832-6997). Please visit our online Tribute at www.quinn-shalz.com.
