Atlantic Beach, Fla. - Alice (Metcalf) Jewett, 102, formerly of Stonington, passed away at her home in Atlantic Beach on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015.

She was born in Whitensville, Mass. on July 15, 1912. In the late 1940s, Alice was president and head of the New London Day Nursery, now part of the Child and Family Agency. After her marriage to Harrison Jewett in 1950, she resided in Shoreham, N.Y. where she became president of the Shoreham Elementary School, helping guide it from a one-room school house to a larger grade school.

Returning to the New London area in 1959 and settling in Stonington, Alice became a real estate agent with the Sparre Agency and Pequot Properties until she retired at age 75. She continued to be active in many civic and charitable organizations - notably the Stonington Garden Club and Stonington Historical Society. She enjoyed many activities, among them, needlework, decoupage, golf and lawn bowls.

Alice is survived by her children, Katharine Chambers Cooke (Boyd), Harrison Leach Jewett Jr. and Eliza Jewett Gray (Stephen); and five grandchildren.

She was predeceased by husbands, Major Robert Chambers Jr. USMC and Harrison Leach Jewett; grandson, Ensign Robert Chambers Cooke, USN; and brothers, Robert Leland Metcalf and James Hoffman Metcalf.
