James Russell “Jim” Shaw, 77, of Atlantic Beach, Fla., passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2019. Jim was born February 10, 1942 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad to James Russell Shaw Sr. and Ann (O’Brien) Shaw. After graduating from Bishop Kenny High School in 1960, Jim received his bachelor’s in business administration from Loyola University New Orleans in 1965. He went on to earn his MBA from the University of Florida in 1966. Upon graduation, he embarked on a 30-year career with BellSouth, starting out as a college recruiter and retiring as an executive director overseeing human resources for the Carolinas, Tennessee and Kentucky. After retiring from BellSouth, he served as the first president of Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless in downtown Jacksonville.
A life-long community leader, Jim served as chairman of multiple organizations across Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina including: the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Junior Achievement, Rotary Club, Gay and Lesbian Task Force (Columbia, SC), S.C. School for the Deaf and Blind, and Telephone Pioneers.
In his spare time, he enjoyed running on the beach, reading newspapers, playing with his grandchildren, and making everyone around him laugh.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Jacquelyn Hacker Shaw. He is survived by his children, Sarah (Mark) Fisher, Will (Lindee) Shaw, Jamie (Trenton) Miller, and Lauren (John) Wilkinson; 11 grandchildren; his brother Barry (Margaret) Shaw; and his sister Karen (Joe Baskowski) Shaw.
Friends are invited to celebrate Jim’s life on Thursday, December 19, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home, 3600 3rd St. S., Jacksonville Beach.
