Michael K. Shalz - Founder

November 30, 1959 - April 22, 2006
A 1982 University of Central Oklahoma graduate, was a second-generation funeral director and was  one of only two funeral directors in Northeast Florida with a bachelor's degree in Mortuary Science. He worked for many years as the Managing Director of the renowned Muehlebach Funeral Home in Kansas City and as a general manager and area vice president for Service Corporation International, the parent company of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home. He is survived by his wife, Mary Quinn-Shalz, and son, Jacob Quinn-Shalz. He was actively involved with Hospice, Rotary club of Ponte Vedra, Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Columbus, Ponte Vedra Chamber of Commerce and was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church of Ponte Vedra Beach.

General John T. (Jack) Quinn - Founder

May 7, 1929 - December 24, 2006
A 1952 West Point graduate with an MS from Georgetown University and his wife, Kay (they dated in high school in New Haven, CT), came to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1991. Retiring from the Army in 1986, after 34 years of service including three Infantry combat tours in Vietnam, and Airborne-Ranger assignments, Jack taught at the college level and was a director of the Ft. Riley Bank in Ft. Riley, Kansas. In addition to Kay, Tom, Bill and Mary, he is also survived by his sons, Father John Quinn, SJ (a former Marine), Michael and Dan. The General is past president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of the Beaches area (a volunteer society that helps all needy families, without regard to religion, race or age.) He also was a Life member of the Knights of Columbus and a former director on the board of the Ponte Vedra Community Association.

 

Darlene B. Smith - Funeral Director
A graduate of Florida Community College with an Associate of Science in Mortuary Science, she has been employed with Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home & Cremation Centre since 2002 and Managing Director since 2006. Darlene and her husband, Lynn have five children, Melissa, Nikki, Cory, Lyndsey, and Logan and one granddaughter, Makayla. She is an active member of First Baptist Church.

 

 

Jeana G. Mattson - Funeral Director
A graduate of the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in Mortuary Science, she has been employed with Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home & Cremation Centre since 2006. Jeana and her husband, Darren have three children, November, Sara, and Toby.

 

 

James H. Turtur - Funeral Director
A graduate of St. Petersburg Junior College with an Associate of Science in Funeral Services, he has been employed with Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home & Cremation Centre since 2007. Jim and his wife, Mary, have a daughter, Jamie and two grandchildren, Sydney and Jude. He is an active member of the Ponte Vedra Lions Club.

 

 

Tom Quinn
A 1979 West Point graduate, (Infantry-Airborne-Ranger) is the founder and president of LEADERS Professional Recruiting, Inc. a locally headquartered professional recruiting firm specializing in placing junior military leaders into dynamic corporate careers nationwide. He is active in Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church. He and his wife, Sheryl, have three daughters, Christie, Jessica and Katie.

 



Bill Zinn
Bill Zinn, a staff associate, is a deacon of Neptune Beach Baptist Church. Zinn is also a church leader and volunteer with the Billy Graham Crusade.




The staff covers ground from the Beaches to Mandarin and participates in many beach activities, including clubs, charities and churches. They are members of Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, the Ponte Vedra Chamber of Commerce, Rotary International, the Ponte Vedra Community Association, the Knights of Columbus, the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, the St. Vincent de Paul Society of the Beaches, the Long-time Newcomers Club, and they volunteer with Community Hospice. The Quinn and Shalz families are also active members of St. Paul's Catholic Church and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
